What is a cross-connection? You may be wondering what is a cross-connection and why does it matter? In this section, we will look at what it is and why it is important. In a plumbing system, a cross-connection is a point where the potable water supply is connected to the a contaminated or non-potable source. Contaminants or pollutants can enter the drinking water system through cross-connections that are uncontrolled when backflow occurs. In all plumbing systems, you will find a cross-connection. To protect the drinking water, all cross-connection points must be identified and tested to determine what backflow protection is required. Basins, sinks, hose bibs, irrigation systems, reused water lines, and swimming pools can all be points of cross-connection. What is backflow? When water flows in the opposite direction it was designed to flow in, it is called backflow. When a reverse in the direction of the flow is caused by a change in pressures, backflow can lead to contamination of the drinking water system. With backflow, there are two types; backpressure and back-siphonage. Back siphonage is because of negative pressure within the supply line. There are a few ways that a back-siphonage can occur, and these are when repairs are made to the waterline and when the water supply is shut off. Backpressure then occurs when the potable water supply is connected to another higher pressure system. The main causes are pressure valves, booster pumps, and elevated plumbing. Backflows need to be tested annually to ensure that there is sufficient pressure in the pipes to ensure that all drinking water remains safe and clean for consumer consummation. Tests need to be submitted to the council so that there is a record of all the testing.
